One of my favorite things about transforming closets is how the space looks when my team is done with it. The “before” and “after” photos of many closets show a drastic difference in organization and the use of space. Something else that I find makes a big difference is lighting. Installing the right lighting in your walk-in closet can go far in making it more appealing and easy to use.
Some of the top walk-in closet lighting options for illuminating your space are:
If you’re ready to brighten up your walk-in closet, let’s discuss these options in more detail.
LED strips are a popular option for closet systems because they’re versatile and can provide light in a variety of small or dark spaces. They’re made of flexible strips with adhesive, and they can be added along shelves, underneath cabinets, or around the clothing rods to illuminate every corner of your closet.
Oftentimes, you can even choose different colors for the lights, so you may want to use warmer, yellow tones early in the morning and a brighter bluish-white during the day. If your closet has limited natural light, LED strips can be a good choice to really brighten up those dark corners.
Your closet probably has an overhead light of some sort. Many times, builders’ grade lighting in a closet consists of a dome light that doesn’t look very modern and also doesn’t shed much light in the space. Recessed lighting is a great choice for the closet because not only does it not impede into the closet space but it also looks modern and provides a lot of brightness.
You can install recessed canister lights above the area where you get dressed or above your vanity to provide extra light. Another option is to install them along the perimeter of the closet to light up the entire space without adding shadows. Dimmer switches can allow you to control how bright the lights are.
Pendant lights are an upgrade from typical overhead dome lights. They look stylish and come in a variety of designs, so you can match or complement your existing decor. They hang down, so you’ll want to be sure not to install them too low; hitting your head on the light isn’t a good way to start the day, after all!
Consider hanging a pendant light over your island in the closet. Another option is to hang one in the entrance of your closet to welcome you into the space. If you want even more brightness and elegance, consider hanging a chandelier instead of a traditional one-bulb pendant.
Not every lighting option requires you to either do your own wiring or hire an electrician. If you want hassle-free illumination, there are lots of battery-operated choices available. Some will need to be anchored in some way, but others have an adhesive that allows you to place them anywhere.
Better Homes & Gardens has some tips for using battery-operated lights in the closet, including using rechargeable light bulbs, tap lights, and rotating wall lights.
I like motion-activated lights, as they are very convenient when you’re putting clothes away or otherwise have your hands full. They’re equipped with motion sensors and will automatically turn on when they detect movement.
You’ll want to put them in the entryway of your closet, so they’ll turn on as soon as you step in. Another good place for motion-activated lighting in the walk-in closet is along the floor to prevent tripping and to allow you to see what you have stored down below your eye level.
