How to Keep Your Office Space Organized

An office is one of the easiest and quickest places in the home to be left unorganized. That’s mainly because not too many guests see it and it usually serves as the catchall for anything that doesn’t fit anywhere else in the house. However, an organized home office is not only good for productivity, but it’s good for the soul. You’ll feel more in control and you won’t be distracted by having to take time out to find things. Here are a few ways you can add calm to the chaos.

Purge and Store Away Old Files

Although most documents are handled electronically these days, you might still need to hold onto old paper files. Use storage boxes to prevent papers from getting yellow or wrinkled, and away from your workspace. Having a shredder handy will take the worry out of throwing away any papers with personal information.

Use a Tiered In-box

A vertical three-tray system will help you control the flow of incoming and outgoing papers. Use the top tray for new documents that need immediate attention, second for those papers you have opened with a later due date (like bills), and bottom for papers that need to be filed away.

Use Multi-Purpose Furniture

Most home offices are small so choose furniture that has dual purposes. For instance, a storage bench or ottoman can be placed in a corner for extra seating while giving you more space to keep items you don’t always need.

Use Shelves for More Than Just Books

If desk space is tight, keep items like storage bins and printers on a bookshelf. Most printers are wireless these days so you don’t need to worry about tripping over any.

Don’t Forget the Walls

Add sturdy wall-mounted shelving to hold items for quick access. Use the wall space in front of you to put up a pegboard, corkboard and even small baskets to keep you organized.
